Podcast Launch & Author Engagement Strategy
Written Word Media is a growing digital platform built to connect readers with books and support independent authors and publishers in reaching their audiences. As the company scaled, its founders recognized a familiar growing pain: the direct, personal relationships that defined the business in its early days had become harder to maintain. Walk West partnered with Written Word Media to launch The Written Word Podcast as a 10-episode research and development initiative, designed to evaluate whether a podcast could deepen engagement with their existing author customer base and build the case for long-term investment in the channel.

The Challenge: Audience Complexity
In the early days of Written Word Media, founders Ricci and Ferol had frequent, hands-on interactions with the authors they served. Those conversations were the heartbeat of the business. As the company grew, those personal touchpoints became less frequent and less intimate.
The podcast was designed to close that gap. By creating a conversational, founder-led audio channel, Written Word Media could speak directly to authors' real challenges, goals, and opportunities in a format that felt authentic rather than transactional. The target audience was not a cold one: these were independent authors and publishers already inside the Written Word Media ecosystem who simply needed a new reason and a new way to engage.
The challenge was building something that felt personal at scale, and doing it in a way that was sustainable, measurable, and worthy of continued investment.
Our Approach: Engineering for Growth
Phase 1: Strategic Discovery & Competitive Audit
2 weeks vs. 4–5 weeks traditional
Before a single episode was recorded, we used AI-powered research tools to map the podcast landscape for independent authors and publishing industry content. This gave us a clear picture of what competitors were doing, where audience attention was concentrated, and which content formats and topics drove the strongest engagement.
Our discovery process included:
-
Competitive Analysis: Rapid audit of existing podcasts serving the author and publishing space, identifying content gaps and positioning opportunities for Written Word Media to own
-
Audience Insight Mapping: AI-assisted synthesis of author community feedback, forum conversations, and platform data to surface the topics and formats most likely to resonate with the target listener
-
Format Strategy: Data-informed recommendations on episode length, release cadence, guest mix, and distribution channels based on performance benchmarks across comparable shows
Phase 2: Content Development & Production
Ongoing across 10-episode run
With a clear strategic foundation in place, we moved into production with a content architecture built for both quality and reuse.-
Episode Planning: Developed a topic framework across 10 episodes that mapped directly to the challenges and goals surfaced during discovery, ensuring each conversation delivered genuine value to the author audience
-
AI-Assisted Content Workflows: Used natural language processing tools to streamline research, outline development, and post-production tasks, reducing the production lift per episode without sacrificing depth or authenticity
-
Multi-Format Content Engine: Each episode was treated as a content system rather than a standalone asset, producing full-length audio and video, multiple short-form clips, email-ready summaries, and social distribution content from a single recording session
Phase 3: Distribution & Platform Optimization
Ongoing
-
Cross-Platform Publishing: Episodes were distributed across all major podcast platforms alongside YouTube, maximizing discoverability and meeting listeners where they already spend time
-
Podcast Marathon Activation: A dedicated virtual event generated two clips that reached 2,200+ YouTube views, creating a measurable spike in episode engagement and demonstrating the audience development potential of live programming
-
Performance Tracking: Established baseline metrics across downloads, streams, and subscriber growth to inform the case for long-term investment
